Quality at affordable prices
As consumer habits vary considerably from region to region, it is the various trends that define consumer needs in the wine segment. Nevertheless, there are a number of developments of a more general nature.
- In the major markets of Western Europe, North, Central and South America, the trend is towards wines in the medium quality range or average price category. These standard type wines cater for more than a third of the market overall
- Red wines dominate and hold a market share of around 60 percent
- Purchases are defined by taste, style and price criteria. Many consumers prefer wines that represent a certain producing region, traditions and individuality
- Quality awareness is growing. Inferior bouquets and tastes are rejected increasingly
- Convenience is becoming more important: the demand for easy to handle packaging, for example, in airline catering, picnics or excursions is growing. Consequently, wine is increasingly being filled in smaller portions, and more often in consumer friendly cartons
